Honorable Mention On Seeing My First Firefly steve Williams Dishwater dusk, luminous chemistry of silent hormones. Hummingbird moths in mosquito flight. Females on black leaves answer in synchronized strobes; some are stained sirens waiting to devour amorous males. Guess the interval of darkness; each foray of uncertainty, The moment before each streaking rocket bursts into fireworks. Shut your eyelids, hear the blood in your inner ear, become your own conch. Contemplate that piece of time until lips pillow against your own; that ache above your tailbone as fingertips trace the shape of your spine. Count backwards from a 100 please… Is it dark enough for fireworks daddy? A streetlight flickers in porcelain beams, a globe of clarity. Wings rustle, robins coo. Twilight blinks, keeps time with the call of mockingbirds chasing fireflies.
